JR House is a contemporary addition to a Federation sandstone villa. The simple rectangular design with a generous double-height volume provides a bright and open new living space. The main objective was to facilitate sun penetration all day and all year round with high level windows to capture the northern sun beyond the height of the existing house.
A kitchen designed for passionate cooks sits below a mezzanine study, which offers the best view of the lofty lounge and dining. A wood fired pizza oven is integrated with the main building structure and linked by a servery window overlooking the garden. These interconnecting spaces and relationship to the outdoors reflect the family’s desired lifestyle.
Natural and uncomplicated materials compliment the simplicity of the architectural form, including burnished concrete, raw timber external cladding, oak joinery and white painted brick. Subtle textures of the brickwork’s intentional imperfections are highlighted by the passage of the afternoon sun.
