Type | House Addition

Completed | 2013

Area | 270 sqm

Residence R consists of alterations to a Victorian bluestone villa and a large pavilion-style addition to double the footprint of the original family home. Inspired by Californian Case Study Houses, the addition features strong horizontal lines, warmth of natural materials and a simple composition of open plan living spaces.

Balanced proportions and considered detailing links the contemporary addition to the existing house. The sandstone layout for new internal and external walls was custom designed with calculated heights and interlocking lengths to reference the architecture’s inherent linearity, as a contrast to the exposed rear bluestone villa wall.

A distinctive ‘floating’ roof is lightly supported by exposed steel columns and continuous high level frameless glazing allows natural light to penetrate the new living spaces. Together with large sliding glass doors opening to the terrace and garden it creates a great sense of transparency and connectivity to the outdoors.
